There is a classic saying: “You eat with your eyes first”. Essentially, if a place looks good, you are more likely to go there and enjoy a meal. This is important to remember for a cafe design, as the way it looks will make customers decide whether or not they want to visit and spend money there.

Read this short guide to find out how the use of colour and decoration in your coffee shop design can help improve the environment and make your business succeed.

Choosing a colour

Certain colours are proven to have different impacts on customers, so when choosing a colour scheme for your cafe, it is important to consider how you want customers to feel when entering:

  • Light colours (beige, white and light grey) make your cafe look bigger and more spacious. This can help to create a modern look which appeals to a variety of demographics, and can help your cafe look more appealing if you have limited space.
  • Natural colours (green and brown) create a relaxed feeling when used for a cafe interior design. These colours often work well in a more rural environment, creating a sense of unison with the natural landscape outside.
  • Cosy colours (warmer shades of red, orange and brown) make a customer want to stay longer and have been known to increase appetite. These colours can work best if you are expecting an older clientele or want to focus on customers looking for food over just tea and coffee.
  • Bold colours (bright green, blue and yellow) create a visually interesting and unique environment. Bright colour palettes can help make your cafe memorable and create a ‘buzz’, something conducive with targeting a younger audience.

When choosing a colour scheme, you need to take into consideration your company logo, as you don’t want this to clash with your coffee shop aesthetic.

Choosing a theme

Colour isn’t the only thing which impacts your coffee shop aesthetic. Make sure your staff’s uniform matches the style you’re trying to get across. Denim aprons may work well with more natural colours and smarter attire is likely to work better if you’re targeting business people as your desired clientele. Cafe design also involves careful consideration of decorations and furniture – something we’ll be discussing in the next section of this series.
