So you are planning the refurbishment of your business and are looking for some new table tops to brighten up your commercial interior. With such a wide variety of table tops available for commercial use in the UK, it can be quite a daunting task to find the right tops for your business. For this reason we have decided to write a post to help you understand the pro’s and con’s of each type to help you decide which table tops will be most suitable for your bar, restaurant, pub or café. We have listed each type of table top below with a description detailing all you need to know and how suitable they are for each type of commercial interior.
Types of Table Top
Laminate Table Tops
Many years ago laminate table tops were considered to be an inferior product when compared to their solid wooden counterparts. This was because in the early stages of this materials development, there were not many laminate decors available and the ones that you could buy used to crack or bubble and a new table top would look very used and worn fairly quickly. Decades have gone by since this was the case and with much improved manufacturing techniques laminate table tops not only look the part these days, but now there longevity far exceeds that of a solid wooden table top in the same commercial environment. Modern laminate tables are very hard wearing, resilient to scratching and heat resistant to 180° F which makes them perfect for commercial use where food is being served such as cafes, pubs and restaurants. They are also very easy to clean and easy to maintain.
The industry standard thickness for a laminate top is 25mm or 1” however 40mm and 50mm thicknesses are not uncommon and can be manufactured for bespoke orders. The thicker tops usually have a BDE (Built Down Edge) instead of being the same thickness all the way through. This not only keeps the cost down but it also has the benefit of concealing the table base attachment when looking at the table from the side. The core material of a laminate table top is MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard) that has one of many laminate decors bonded to the top side and a balancing laminate (usually white or grey) bonded to the underside. The purpose of the balancing laminate is to keep the top flat and prevent it from bowing. Some manufacturers self-edge the table tops (use the same material on the edges as the top) this has its drawbacks because self-edges are prone to chipping and peeling. Warner Contracts only use matching ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) edges, which look like the same material as the top but are actually made from a shock absorbent plastic which prevents chipping and peeling.
As a general rule laminate table tops tend to modernise an interior; however there are literally thousands of decors to choose from, some of which have a distressed appearance and textured finish which could potentially be used to maintain a traditional room setting. Our preferred laminate supplier is Egger due to their expansive range of quality laminate decors which suit a broad range of commercial interiors. Decors can also be sourced from a number of other companies such as Formica, Polyrey, Woodlam, Abet and Oberflex.
Warner Contracts stock a good range of laminate table top sizes and shapes, we can also produce bespoke sizes when required. All of our table bases can be used to support laminate tops even if you have not purchased them from us. You don’t need to drill pilot holes to attach them, just use 1” self tapping screws and drive them in using a power drill.
MFC Table Tops
MFC (Melamine Faced Chipboard) has been broadly used in the production of commercial and domestic furniture for many years. It was first introduced in the 1950’s as a material to make kitchen work surfaces and cupboards out of. These days the use of MFC is even more widespread and now it is also used as a commercial table top material in the corporate, education, leisure and hospitality industries.
The principle behind MFC is very similar to that of laminates, however the core material is chipboard rather than MDF, as this helps to reduce the cost. And instead of having a high pressure laminate bonded to the top a thin layer of melamine is applied which seals the surface and provides protection against wear and tear. The melamine is applied to the top and bottom of the table which means there is no need for a balancing laminate and both sides of the table top look the same.
As with laminate table tops Warner Contracts only use ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) edging as this helps to prevent chipping and peeling. We currently stock MFC Table Tops in four colours and in a variety of sizes with bespoke options also available. All of the MFC tops we supply are 25mm thick and can be used with any of our table bases.
MFC Table Tops provide many of the same properties as laminates, they are easy to clean, hard wearing and heat resistant to 140° F.
Solid Hardwood Table Tops
One of the most traditional materials used to manufacture table tops is solid hardwood. It’s virtually impossible to replicate the warmth and character of this natural material with any man made substance, further to this each top has its individual wood grain and therefore is 100% unique. Hardwood Tops are a perfect way to maintain a traditional commercial interior such as in a country pub or restaurant.
Although not quite as durable as laminates, when finished with an AC (Acid Catalyst) lacquer Hardwood Tops will withstand everyday use in commercial environments such as pubs and restaurants. They are also relatively easy to clean however certain industrial cleaning agents need to be avoided so the lacquer is not discoloured.
Warner Contracts stock a variety of 25mm thick solid wooden tops in Walnut, Oak, Wenge and Natural Wood Stains. Due to the woodgrain it is important to drill pilot holes before screwing the table base into the top, if holes are not drilled you run the risk of splitting the top.
Due to the costs involved in manufacturing these tops, they are considered somewhat of a premium product and as such are towards the top of the price range.
Ash Veneer Table Tops
If you like the look of solid hardwood tops but find that they are outside of your price range then one possibility might be Ash Veneer Table Tops. These are manufactured with an MDF core and a very thin layer of real wood veneer bonded to the surface. The tops are then stained and lacquered in the same contract standard AC (Acid Catalyst) lacquer as real hardwood tops are. Ash Veneer Tops are 25mm thick and the MDF edges are stained to match the top. One of the main drawbacks of these tops is that you can see the MDF on the edges, this isn’t so much of a problem on the darker walnut tables but it is clearly visible on the lighter natural colour tables.
In theory due to the hard wearing lacquer that is used in the finishing process ash veneer tables are equally as hard wearing as the solid hardwood tops. That said over time when the finish has deteriorated solid tops can be sanded down back to raw wood, re-stained and re-lacquered to bring them back to new again. This process cannot be carried out on ash veneer table tops because they only have a thin layer of real wood on the surface.
Any of our contract table bases can be used to support ash veneer table tops, you do not need to drill pilot holes. You can attach the base using 1” self-tapping wood screws once the top has been aligned the right place.
These tops are ideal for indoor use in cafes, canteens, eaterys and some hotels and because of their low cost they can be afforded by many businesses. Their appearance is similar to solid hardwood tops and therefore can be used in both traditional and contemporary commercial interiors.
Werzalit Table Tops
If you like the look of laminate table tops but want to use them outside then Werzalit Table Tops might be the way to go. These are manufactured from a resin composite material that is moulded into various shapes and sizes. One advantage of this kind of table top is that there is no cutting involved in the manufacturing process, each top is moulded as one piece and therefore there are no edges that will let water in or peel.
Werzalit Table Tops are available from UK stock in a wide range of colours, with an even broader array of options available to order with a relatively short lead time (usually 2 – 3 weeks). They are manufactured in Germany and have been on the UK commercial furniture market for many years.
Similar to laminate table tops, Werzalit tops are heat and scratch resistant but they are also weatherproof and UV resistant. One drawback of these tops is that they are not designed for joining 2 or more tops together (to make a larger table when required), this is because they have a bevel edge instead of a straight edge.
Werzalit Table Tops can be used indoors or outdoors and are ideal for cafes, bars, restaurants, break out areas and canteens amongst other uses. There are other companies that manufacture similar resin composite tops such as SM France and Topalit, Warner Contracts can also source from them so please feel free to get in touch if you would like a quotation.
Teak Table Tops
Teak is a beautiful hardwood that grows in the tropics, it has been used as a material to manufacture table tops and other furniture for many years. Teak is a oil rich wood which means that it is naturally weather resistant, making it a perfect material for outdoor furniture production. It is however advisable to oil teak furniture quarterly to help maintain the rich colour of the wood and to prevent it from cracking. This is especially applicable if the furniture is exposed to direct sunlight.
Due to environmental concerns regarding the sustainability of teak hardwood it is important to only buy FSC rated teak products, such as the ones listed on our website. It is also worth considering some other more sustainable alternatives such as acacia and robinia wood to take the pressure off global teak farming. These alternatives are often cheaper and share the vast majority of the properties found in teak and aesthetically they are also very similar. Warner Contracts also stock these products too, please view our table top category.
Marble and Granite Table Tops
Often considered as the ultimate in quality, granite and marble table tops certainly portray a premium image. They will also last indefinitely in a busy commercial environment because they are practically impossible to damage through normal use.
These tops are manufactured with a layer of plywood bonded to the underside to allow pretty much any table base we supply to be screwed into them. Stone table tops are extremely heavy and will require at least two people to move each table. This may be a concern if you constantly have to reposition your tables to accommodate different size groups of customers.
Price is also an important factor to consider as marble and granite table tops are right at the top of the price range. That said once you purchase these tops you should never have to replace them for maintenance purposes. Warner Contracts do not stock these products however we have supplied many businesses with them over the years, if you would like quotation please get in touch with sales.
Warner Contracts Ltd. have been busy recently launching a brand new range of Rattan Furniture Sets ready for Summer 2015. The range has now been selected with stock arriving each week, many of the products are already on our website and more will be added in the near future.
Our outdoor rattan furniture has many uses and applications; we supply these to hotels for use in their gardens and grounds. Health Spas are another big market for us and also our rattan dining sets have been popular with restaurants, bars and cafes with outdoor serving areas.
The new range consists of rattan sofas and corner sofas, sofa and chair sets, dining sets, bar sets, rattan daybeds and sun loungers. Each set is available in a choice of colours and many items include soft padded seat cushions for additional comfort. Please see some examples of our new range below.
Please note; each set is sold complete. We can’t split sets down and supply individual items. If you are buying more than one set it’s always worth giving our sales team a call as we are often able to discount bulk orders and save you some money.
Comments Off on Zero Waste Catering for Restaurants and Cafes
You may be surprised or even shocked to find out that one third of all food we produce globally goes to waste. To put that in perspective 1.3 billion tons of food is wasted per annum, which is enough to feed 12% of the population. To look at it a different way, to produce the amount of food the average person wastes per year, 498m2 of arable land is needed (almost the size of 2 tennis courts).
With an ever increasing population, the amount of food that we waste globally will naturally increase unless we do something about it. There are many contributing factors to this issue, which include food production, domestic food waste and also commercial waste. This post investigates methods in which commercial catering businesses such as restaurants, cafes, pubs and hotels can reduce their waste. After all 600,000 tons of food is wasted at a commercial level each year in the UK resulting in a substantial cost to the economy and a huge cost to the environment.
The food waste pyramid shown below is a visual representation of the process that needs to be adopted in order to reduce wastage. The most preferred option stands at the top of the hierarchy whereas the least preferred, in this case landfill is shown at the bottom.
First and foremost is to Reduce the amount of waste generated, you can do this by planning orders more accurately to prevent overstocking and over production. Investing in better storage facilities to maximise the shelf life of the food. Or identify alternative markets or methods to sell your food, such as specials boards or reduced prices.
Food that you can’t sell, but is still good to eat should be given to people in need. There are many charities set up to redistribute food amongst disadvantaged people such as the homeless.
Any food that is no longer fit for human consumption could be used as livestock feed. Wherever possible you should direct any bakery, fruit, vegetables and dairy products to farms and small holdings so they can feed it to their animals. Remember that 25% of food waste is made up of scraps, out of which 90% is reusable.
Energy recovery is a very expansive subject and covers a lot of areas, some of which we will look at in more detail later in this article. The under pinning ethos is that any unavoidable food waste is sent to composting, or to be used as fuel for transport, to create heat or electricity.
Finally any food waste that does not fit into the previous categories will be sent to landfill and disposed of. However it is important to remember that food waste in landfill sites gives off methane gas as it breaks down which is 21 x worse than carbon dioxide. Therefore this should only be used as an absolute last resort as there are many more environmentally friendly alternatives available.
If you’re a restaurateur or business owner you may be concerned about the costs associated with implementing measures to reduce the waste that your company generates and this may well act as a deterrent. However it is possible to significantly reduce your waste without spending a penny, quite the opposite in some cases as it is estimated a 20% reduction in food waste would save a restaurant approximately £2000 per year. Further to this, restaurants with good sustainability credentials could potentially be more appealing to an increasingly environmentally focused population. A study indicates that 70% of diners would prefer to eat in a restaurant with good environmental ethics when compared to a restaurant that doesn’t. So to summarise the points made in this paragraph, by minimising the impact that your business is having on the environment, in theory you can reduce costs and increase revenue.
How Can the Amount of Waste a Restaurant Generates be Reduced?
There are many ways that you can reduce waste in a restaurant, cafe or any other commercial catering business. To begin with you need to create a system for organising your waste, it is imperative that food is separated from other waste that you are disposing of. For example you may have one bin for organic waste, one for card / paper, one for metal and one for glass. When you have an infrastructure in place, you can then build on it. Train your staff well to ensure that they stick to your new waste management regime.
Sourcing ingredients locally not only supports your surrounding communities and reduces your impact on the environment due to lowered transit time. But it also means that you can buy just what you require and top up later if needed. This minimises the chances of food going off before you have chance to serve it to your customers.
Whilst it is often good to provide a variety of dishes on your menu, each dish could potentially be adding to your overall food waste. This is because your chef(s) will need to prepare a set of ingredients for each dish offered so you don’t run out. By carefully analysing your menu and perhaps in some cases reducing the number of choices or changing them to minimise preparation you can significantly reduce your overall food waste.
A widespread issue in commercial catering is that many diners leave a proportion of their food on their plate, a study shows that 27% of diners in the UK do this and 41% of them say that it is because the portions were too big. There are a number of ways to avoid this problem; A traditional method to combat this is to provide doggy bags so your customers can take any unfinished meals home with them to eat at a later date. A study has indicated that the majority of customers would feel embarrassed to ask for this service but would be more than happy to accept a doggy bag if it was offered to them. A more recent method of food waste prevention is to provide a “Top up System” where diners can ask for a second helping if the first portion wasn’t enough to fill them. An alternative method to this is to serve small, regular and large portions, priced accordingly and let the diner decide upon ordering.

The designs we have chosen reflect current contract interior trends and can be used in a wide variety of commercial settings such as restaurants, cafes, bars, pubs, offices, schools and universities.
The majority of the contract furniture that we supply is held in UK stock which enables us to offer quick delivery to our customers on most items. This policy extends to the new tables and chairs that we have just added to our range and are in stock now available to buy online.
Below you will find some of the newest designs that caught our eye either for their aesthetics, or for the functionality that they offer.
Paris Chair, Low Stool and High Stool
The vintage Industrial trend has been around for a while now and is still showing no signs of slowing down. Our latest addition to this range is called the Paris, which is available as a side chair, low stool and high stool. Manufactured from steel with a powder coated grey finish, the Paris range is strong, durable and looks great in a variety of commercial interiors such as cafes and bars. The best part is that these chairs and stools are among the cheapest of their style on the market, available to buy now from Warner Contract Furniture. Please view the Paris range in our Cafe Furniture section
Chunky Laminate Tops
Following a recent surge of enquiries of 50mm thick laminate table tops, we have decided to introduce them into our range as a stocked item. Our Chunky Laminate Tables are available in either Walnut or Wenge wood colours and they come in a variety of sizes to cater for 2 seater, 4 seater and 5 seater groups. As with all of our laminate tops, the edges are finished with a matching 2mm strip of ABS edging. To the untrained eye you hardly notice it, but the ABS edging helps to prevent peeling and completely eliminates chipping edges. An extended warranty is offered free of charge on all of these tops to show just how confident we are in their durability. If you require a size or colour that is not listed please contact a member of our sales team who will be happy to quote for bespoke size tops made to your specification.
MFC Table Tops
To offer a cheaper alternative to our premium laminate tables, we have introduced 25mm thick MFC table tops in beech, white and wenge colour ways. Similar in concept to laminates, however these tops are manufactured with a melamine faced chipboard core that still offers the same durability as the MDF core counterparts but at a fraction of the price. Our MFC tops are available in a variety of sizes including popular 700mm square, 1200mm round and 1500 x 700mm tables which can sit up to 6 people. We aim to hold all sizes in stock but if the size you are looking for is not available, the turnaround time to manufacture these table tops is only 1 – 2 weeks. Bespoke table tops are not a problem either, if you require a particular size that is not listed please get in touch with sales who will be happy to quote for your requirements.
Extra Large Table Bases
Many restaurants, bars and cafes like to have at least one table that can accommodate large groups of people, sometimes up to 12 around a single table. Up until now finding a table base that will support such a large top and will still fit in with your existing commercial interior has been quite a challenge. Well not any more with the introduction of not one, but two styles of extra large, heavy duty metal tables. The largest being the Massimo Table Base that will accommodate a table top measuring up to 2000mm diameter or 1800mm square, that’s enough to sit 12 – 14 people for full dining. Manufactured from heavy duty cast iron with a four column rigid construction and a black powder coated finish these tables look great in just about any modern contract interior. Available to buy online from Warner Contract Furniture.
Secondly we now stock the Valencia Dining Table which is manufactured from ultra hard wearing mild steel that’s finished with a grey powder coating. Not quite as large as its counterpart, these table bases will support a 1600mm diameter or a 1400mm square table top. Which is still enough to sit 8 – 10 customers with relative ease for full dining. Many of our customers use this table base to accommodate a round table top in the centre of curved booth seating. To round it off the Massimo and Valencia table bases both come with an extended 3 year guarantee so you can be rest assured that they are durable enough to withstand even the harshest catering environments.
Fabio Table Base
If you are looking for a practical and flexible dining table base then the Fabio may be for you. We supply these in sets of two which allows you to buy as many supports as you need for your table top. Or even just purchase one set if you are looking for something to prop up one end of a bar. This flexible system can be used to support just about any size or shape table top you can think of. The Fabio is also one of the most cost effective options that we offer and is one of the cheapest table bases that you will find on the internet.
Forza and Danilo Table Base
The Forza and Danilo table bases are designed to be used in modern cafes, bars and restaurants. There are 39 different size and shape options to choose from across the two ranges catering for round or square tops ranging from 600mm to 1500 x 900mm. All sizes are available in coffee, dining and poseur height.
Forza Table Bases are manufactured from premium grade cast iron with a heavy duty black powder coated finish offering some resistance to scratching and general wear. These tables offer a modern and slimline design that looks fantastic in contemporary cafes and restaurants.
Danilo Table Bases are available in coffee, dining and poseur heights, this style is also manufactured with a cast iron core but instead of a powder coated finish the Danilo range has a brushed stainless steel cover plate. Which is easy to clean and helps to lighten a commercial interior. Supplied with adjustable feet as standard, the Danilo can be used on floors that are not level. Please view our the full Danilo range in our Table Base section
Hoxton Dining Chair Range
Possible the most versatile addition to our range of seating is the Hoxton Dining Chair. Not only are these available in an array of eye catching colours. Comments Off on Cafe Furniture Supplied to Harrogate Council
Warner Contracts Ltd. Have recently been awarded a contract to supply commercial dining chairs and bar stools to a café which is owned by Harrogate Borough Council. The café is located inside the Hydro Leisure Centre in Harrogate, serving drinks and snacks to people who have just been for a workout.
Harrogate Borough Council choose our Fiesta Chairs and Fiesta Bar Stools to use in the café for their robustness and stacking abilities. The cafe furniture was delivered to the site in Yorkshire at the beginning of August 2014 where it was installed by the contracts on site. We look forward to hearing from the council again in the near future regarding their next project.
Comments Off on Restaurant Furniture Supplied to Belted Burgers
Belted Burgers contacted our sales team recently to purchase commercial furniture for their new up market burger restaurant in Carlisle, Cumbria. After discussing their initial requirements we drew up a specification which included furniture for their restaurant dining room, bar area and also an area outside the restaurant where customers could enjoy their meal outdoors. The restaurant is housed in a former general post office on Warwick Street and for this reason the client wanted to modernise the interior slightly but also maintain some of the traditional aspects of the old building to create a contrast in the aesthetics and character.
Our proposal for the dining room included Maria 4 Leg and Maria Twin Pedestal dining table bases which support 2 seater Black Laminate Table Tops. We also supplied an extra large bespoke dining table to fit inside their booth seating.
We put forward our Taunton High Stools in both cream and brown faux leather for the bar area to go with our Continental Poseur Tables in black cast iron, this was to maintain the traditional aesthetics of the bar area which contrasts with the modern interior of the dining room.
Belted Burgers wanted to create an inviting exterior to the premises by adding some high quality outdoor furniture; they also wanted this furniture to be able to stack for convenient storage. Our sales team suggested the Juliana Flip Top Table in a dark grey colour coupled with black Werzalit Outdoor Table Tops. Not only could these tables flip with the integral mechanism, the cleverly designed bases also stack into one another allowing the tables to be stored away, quickly, safely and easily in a minimum amount of space.
The client requested a quick turnaround as they needed the furniture to be delivered in time for their opening on 3rd July 2014. Warner Contracts Ltd. Didn’t disappoint with the whole project being delivered to site in Carlisle with more than enough time for the restaurant to be set up and have a few dry runs before their opening to the public. The up market burger restaurant looks truly fantastic, the owners have done a great job of bringing it all together and we look forward to their next restaurant opening very soon.

New for 2014 we have introduced the Hitchcock, this vintage retro armchair is manufactured from aluminium which supports a mesh weave seat and back.
